Kunsthochschule Kassel

The Kunsthochschule Kassel (KhK) is an internationally oriented art school in Kassel, Germany, and part of the University of Kassel. It brings together fine arts, visual communication, design, art education and art history, and with the right to award doctorates and habilitations it is one of the few German art schools with university status. About 900 students are enrolled, and the school runs 14 interdisciplinary workshops, continuing the Bauhaus tradition of combining craft and artistic skills. Its roots go back to the academy of painting and sculpture opened in Kassel in 1777; it took its present form in 1997. The Visual Communication programme includes classes in animation and in film and moving image, and its graduates include the Oscar-winning animation directors Wolfgang and Christoph Lauenstein (Balance) and Thomas Stellmach (Quest).
