It is run by volunteers on a non-commercial basis by FICNOVA, a non-profit humanist association in Spain inspired by Universalist Humanism, together with teams in other countries. The first edition took place in 2013. The festival is polycentric: the selection is screened in several host cities at once, including Madrid and Vigo, Santiago de Chile, Mexico City, Tandil and Prague. The competition is held every two years in the week of 2 October, the International Day of Non-Violence. It has a General Section for feature, medium-length and short films and a section for primary and secondary schools. The award is the “Estela”, a bronze and copper statuette by Daniel Zimmermann; there is no cash prize.
