It dates back to 1993 and is founded by the Russian-European Film Association (REKA) with support from the Government of the Leningrad Region. Its founding figures include filmmakers Savva Kulish, Stanislav Rostotsky and Marlen Khutsiev and composer Mikael Tariverdiev. The programme centres on three juried competitions — fiction features, non-fiction films of any length and short animation — open to Russian films and Russian co-productions completed since the previous edition. A separate Vyborg Account competition brings together the fiction competition and films awarded at other Russian festivals during the year; its Golden Ladya prizes are decided by a vote of filmmakers, press and audience.
