Each year the selection committee views around a thousand animated shorts and picks a little over a hundred for competitive programmes grouped by genre, theme or audience age: the International, Swiss, Doc'Anim (animated documentary) and Labo (experimental) competitions, Caramel and Pistachio for the youngest viewers, competitions for school classes, and Convergences, a programme for teenagers in the child and adolescent psychiatry division of Geneva University Hospitals. Young audiences are at the centre of the festival: about half of its viewers are children from day-care centres, pupils and students, and several awards are decided by children's votes. Out-of-competition programmes add Swiss premieres of feature films, retrospectives and carte blanche screenings.
