It is a project of the programme “Spiritual and Moral Culture of the Younger Generation of Russia” and is held under the spiritual patronage of the Patriarch of Moscow. The festival counts its beginning from January 2005, when its first screenings took place at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour; its dates are timed to National Unity Day and the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Every film is assessed by a Spiritual Expert Council as well as a selection committee. Juries award cash prizes, diplomas and the “Luchezarny Angel” statuette in feature, short fiction, documentary and animation competitions, alongside out-of-competition and retrospective programmes, charity screenings and animation and art workshops.
