Its concept came from Leningrad documentary director Mikhail Litvyakov, who led the festival for twenty years and is its honorary president; since 2010 its president has been director Alexey Uchitel. The festival emblem and its Centaur prizes are based on “The Infant Centaur”, a drawing by Nadya Rusheva. Held annually in St. Petersburg, the festival now covers documentary, short fiction, animated and experimental film while keeping non-fiction at its centre. It runs three competitions: an International Competition for feature-length and short documentaries and for short fiction and animation; a National Documentary Competition for films by Russian directors or producers; and In Silico, an international competition of experimental shorts up to 20 minutes, launched in 2011.
