Submissions are judged on what the editors call head, heart and hand: whether a film breaks new ground, whether it moves the viewer and how skilfully it is made. Story-driven work is preferred over music videos, effects showcases and purely promotional pieces. Short of the Week is a qualifying online channel for short films at the British Independent Film Awards and is on the Canadian Screen Awards list of eligible festivals and online platforms. Since 2026 it also presents the Short of the Week Award at the Ouray International Film Festival in Colorado, with a release on the platform for the
