Instead of an annual edition, its programmers select films year-round and release them on the Short of the Week website, its YouTube channel and the Shortverse community platform; the selection spans every genre and has featured more than 2,000 shorts from over 50 countries. Submissions are judged on what the editors call head, heart and hand: whether a film breaks new ground, whether it moves the viewer and how skilfully it is made. Story-driven work is preferred over music videos, effects showcases and purely promotional pieces. Short of the Week is a qualifying online channel for short films at the British Independent Film Awards and is on the Canadian Screen Awards list of eligible festivals and online platforms.
