Its main competition, Seleção Caminhos, covers Portuguese productions and co-productions of every genre and length and awards the Grand Prize \"City of Coimbra\" together with a full set of technical and artistic prizes, while a FIPRESCI jury gives a critics' prize. Seleção Ensaios shows film-school and training works from Portugal and abroad, and Outros Olhares is reserved for experimental approaches. Non-competitive programmes include screenings for schoolchildren, young people and seniors, Filmes do Mundo with an emphasis on the Portuguese-speaking world, a retrospective and the late-night Turno da Noite. The event began in 1988 as a showcase of Portuguese cinema growing out of a University of Coimbra summer course, returned in 1997 after a seven-year break and has awarded prizes since its fifth edition. It is organised by Caminhos do Cinema Português – Associação de Artes Cinematográficas de Coimbra and is on the priority list of festivals of Portugal's Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual.
