It works with a broader idea of the short film than most festivals: its competitions accept works of up to 60 minutes in fiction, documentary and animation, alongside experimental films and music videos, and the programme sets contemporary work beside attention to film heritage. Besides the International and Portuguese Competitions, which share one jury, the festival runs the Experimental competition, Take One! for Portuguese film students, the audience-voted My Generation competition and Curtinhas, a competition of films for children aged 3 to 12 judged by a children's jury. Since 2021 its top awards qualify films for the Academy Awards; the festival is also on the Goya list, joined the BAFTA qualifying list in 2026 and nominates a candidate for the European Film Awards. Curtas Pro, its industry strand, gives awards to projects in development and post-production.
