Founded by filmmaker Jonathan Martin and first held in 2014, it is run as a non-profit organisation. Competitions cover feature, short, animated, student and documentary films, music videos, a section for Utah shorts and unproduced feature, short and pilot screenplays. Winners in the major categories receive the Cthulhu Trophy, a pewter statuette designed by Ryan Peterson, and the festival's workshops and labs run under the name Camp Cthulhu.
