It grew out of a week of Italian cinema organised in 1979 by the team of the Ciné-club Jean-Vigo, a Montpellier film society; the event took the name Festival International du Cinéma Méditerranéen de Montpellier in 1989, when it introduced competitions for feature and short films, and added a documentary competition in 2001. Alongside the competitions, the programme combines previews, tributes and retrospectives with screenings for children and secondary-school students. Cinemed Meetings, the professional section since 2013, presents Mediterranean feature projects in development and includes the development grants the festival has awarded to fiction feature projects since 1991.
