The festival presents itself as the continuation of the city's animation tradition, which goes back to the May Festival of Animated Film “Banja Luka 71”, held in 1971 as the first event of its kind in former Yugoslavia. FENIX ART revived animation screenings in the city in 2005, and the festival held its first edition in October 2008. The competitive programmes of short animated films comprise the Grand Competition, the Student Competition and the Children's Competition, alongside Panorama and Student Panorama sections, retrospectives, masterclasses and national focus programmes. The jury awards a Grand Prix and prizes for creativity, animation technique, the best children's film and the best student film; the audience chooses its own winner.
