It began in 2006 in Beijing as the Chinese College Students Film Festival and moved to Xining in 2011, where it took the name Xining FIRST International Film Festival. Feature-length films have been part of the Main Competition since 2012, and a Shortlist Committee selects the finalists before the juries decide the awards. The festival runs three competitions: the Main Competition for features and shorts, with ten awards including Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary and Best Animated Short Film; FIRST FRAME, for films that examine gender and identity through the lives of women and diverse people; and FIRST PIONEER, for formally inventive short films. A separate Short Short Film competition, launched in 2020, is for works of up to five minutes. The dates of the 20th edition are 17–25 July 2026.",[23
"2021",true,[],[28
"more","",[32],815,[],[35
"step-into-the-river-ma-weijia-china-2020","Step Into the River","Lu and Wei, two young girls in a village on a river in rural China, share a special bond…",15,"/img/films/_th600/step-into-the-river-ma-weijia-china-2020-6u9vckry.webp",[42],"Ma Weijia",[]]
