Liana Makaryan

Liana Makaryan was born in Moscow in 1993. In 2017, she graduated from VGIK with a degree in Animation Film Director (workshop of V. A. Olshvang and V. N. Zuikov). Her filmography is still small, except for the work presented at our exhibition, there is a puppet film "The Parable of the Blind" in 2018 and a hand-drawn "Running behind the Wall" in 2019. Each of the films has been shown at international festivals and has awards. In addition to the author's films, Liana also works on TV series, does animation for theatrical productions.

Director's statement
The plot of The Sugar Show is based on Liana's personal story. It was necessary to come up with a film story for the application, but all Liana's thoughts were occupied by the recently ended painful relationship. She studied the motives of people's behavior, the reasons that make them become manipulators in relationships, she couldn't think of anything else, and decided to make her next film about it. How to show a hypocritical person in a movie? In animation, nothing is impossible for such tasks, and Liana came up with the idea that the main character would change his appearance and his head would spin.
