Alexander Zhemchuzhnikov

Born on November 13, 1975 in Berezniki (Perm Region). Studied at the Berezniki School of Music (1994-1998) in balalaika class (teacher - V. Zadorin). Graduated from the composition department of the Urals State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. Class of Professor V. Kobekin (2003). Prize-winner at the All-Russian Competition for Young Composers of Russia (1999), diploma-recipient at the All-Russian Competition for Young Composers "Chamber Opera on a Plot by Nikolai Gogol" (St. Petersburg, Mariinsky Theatre, 2006). Has taken part in the festivals Youth Academies of Russia-2004 (Kazan-Yekaterinburg-Moscow, 2004; Rostov-n/D. - St Petersburg, 2005); Russian Youth Composers' Forum (Yekaterinburg, 2007); "70 Years of Ural Music" (Yekaterinburg, 2009). Grant holder of Ministry of Culture of Sverdlovsk region (2004; 2008) and Ministry of Culture and Mass Communications of Russian Federation (2006). Member of the Union of Composers of Russia (2004). He has collaborated with the Glinka Chamber Orchestra of St Petersburg (conductor A. Sladkovsky) and with the Yekaterinburg ensembles and musicians Parashuk-Quartet, Imiz-Quartet, I. Parashuk - saxophone, A. Borodin - piano and others. He is the organiser of a number of projects held at the Urals Conservatoire and the Urals Philharmonic Society, involving unconventional forms of conducting concerts, where both classical works and contemporary music were performed (4'33''; ARTRESTLING). Nowadays he is a leader of the youth section of the Ural department of the Russian Composers' Union and the creative community "Penguin Club" which unites composers and performers looking for new forms of youth involvement in the field of academic music. The projects "Concert for DJ and Orchestra" with participation of BACH Municipal Chamber Orchestra (October 2009), "Music that nobody has ever heard" (March 2010) and "From classics to drum & bass, or the art of owning a drum kit" (September 2010) have been realized by this community in the cultural centre "Ural".
