Roxy Rezvany

Roxy Rezvany is a BIFA and London Critics Circle nominated British writer-director and producer who has been working in the film and television industries for over ten years. Born and bred in Brent in London; as a director she has a particular interest in telling conventional narratives from underrepresented points of view, particularly when it comes to the themes of ‘family’, ‘grief’, and ‘home’.
Beginning her career in documentaries, she has developed and produced several groundbreaking stories covering topics from human rights abuses in China, to the poaching of endangered species in Cyprus, to the crisis of homeless youth in Jamaica. She worked on both seasons of the Emmy award-nominated series ‘Gaycation’ with Elliot Page, developing the pilot episode under the guidance of Exec Producer Spike Jonze, one of several VICELAND TV series she field produced. She also worked on the AFI award-winning film ‘Lost and Found’ with Grain Media, UKMVA award-nominated digital feature documentary, ‘Hip Hop in the Holy Land’, the Realscreen award-winning show ‘Black Market’ with Michael K Williams, the Broadcast digital award-nominated show ‘Needles and Pins’, and the winner of the New York Newswomen’s Club Front Page Award for TV Special Reporting, ‘States of Undress’ - a documentary series about the politics of fashion.
Her directorial debut, Little Pyongyang (2018), was the recipient of several awards, and premiered internationally in competition at CPH: Dox and locally at Sheffield Doc/Fest. Combining visual art and journalism, it has been named one of the best documentaries available online by Wired and was distributed via The Guardian Documentaries, with a total online audience of over 300k views to date. She was interviewed on BBC World News about the film’s first-of-its-kind access to the North Korean community in the UK and was on the cover of Broadcast’s “Hotshots” issue.
Her follow up documentary film, Wifi Rider (2020), for which she was awarded a One World Media fellowship, was a prize winner at the Torino Short Film Market. It premiered on television in the US on Topic, as part of Roger Ross Williams’ “One Story Up” series and went on to tour with Film London’s Art and Moving Image Network’s ‘Selected 11’. It premiered online on Nowness and as a Vimeo Staff Pick.
Her debut scripted shorts, Honesty (2021) and Photo Booth (2022) have screened in competition at several festivals across the UK including Edinburgh, Cambridge and Leeds, and garnered nominations at the BIFAs and London Critics Circle awards, and special jury mentions at British Shorts Berlin and the South London Film Festival.
As a filmmaker, she has been commissioned to write and direct work for institutions such as the BFI, BBC Film, Barbican and American Vogue. Her work as a documentarian was recently featured as part of a Bertha DocHouse summer showcase. She has been a speaker at Aesthetica Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, The Museum of Tolerance, the IFC Center, Nicer Tuesdays, General Assembly, Underwire Film Festival, The Smalls Film Festival, Soho House, and chaired panels for Women on Docs.
She has expanded her experience into TV drama, working as a shadow and second unit director for Sid Gentle on their latest series ‘Ragdoll’, and HeyDay Films on the second series of ‘The Capture’. She is currently writing a screenplay commission for BBC Film and in development on a feature project for Film4.
