Roya Eshraghi Safaifard

Roya Eshraghi Safaifard was born in 1985 and emigrated from Iran to Costa Rica in 2000. In 2010 he made his first short film, titled Jugando con Arena (Playing with Sand) in memory of his brother. He studied Social Anthropology at the University of Costa Rica and then graduated as a documentary filmmaker from EICTV in Cuba. Among his short films, the following stand out: Yadbood (Reminiscence), a small experimental film; Lorenza, the Radio and You, an observational documentary made in the Sierra Maestra; and Dearkht (The Tree), an essay documentary that, through the image of a tree, alludes to the theme of uprooting and migration. It was nominated for best short film at the 10th edition of the Punto de Vista Festival and won at the Fidba Festival in Argentina. His thesis from the school Nada ni Nadie (Nothing nor Nobody) is an essay on memory that received a Special Mention at the Málaga Film Festival. Recently, the Valdivia Festival held a retrospective of her work, screening these same 4 short films. She has also been invited to be a jury member at FiDocs in Santiago de Chile. Lastly, she has founded her own production company under the name ‘FoadiFilms’ with which she wants to make her first feature-length documentary entitled Un constante partir, which is currently in its development phase. Among other activities, all of them are underlined by a cinema that is born from an emotional terrain.
