Hirotoshi Iwasaki
Hirotoshi Iwasaki (born in 1981, he/him) is an experimental animation artist who earned a Doctorate in Fine Arts from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2019. His research focuses on the coexistence of movement in rotoscoping* as well as memory and creation through tracing. He showcases his work across diverse fields, including fine arts, film, and advertising, earning high acclaim in each. In recent years, he held a solo exhibition at Japan's oldest Shiseido Gallery in 2024 and won the Grand Prix for Non-Narrative Short at the Holland Animation Film Festival in 2015. His animation projects include collaborations with Calvin Klein, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. Additionally, he has received awards from THE ONE SHOW, NY ADC, and Tokyo ADC for his work with DENTSU INC. Iwasaki is also active in documentary film production. He contributed animation to "Beyond Utopia," which was nominated in the Documentary category at the 2024 BAFTA.
He once gave a guest lecture in CalArts, Parsons The New School. Currently, associate professor at Nagoya Zokei University, part-time lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media Department of Animation.
