Tess Martin

Tess Martin is a filmmaker/visual artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Her work is informed by hand-made animation techniques and their potential to explore the human condition. Persistent themes are our place in nature, our relationship to the past, and how memory and perception inform identity. Her practice results in short films, interactive installations, and paintings/prints.
Her films and installations have been exhibited at international galleries and festivals such as TOKAS Hongo (JP), IFFR (NL), Ann Arbor Film Festival (USA), and more. She was selected as an artist-in-residence at, among others, the Camargo Foundation (France, 2019), the Bogliasco Foundation (Italy, 2017), and the Djerassi Resident Artist Program (USA, 2016). Recent funders include the Dutch Film Fund, the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, the City of Rotterdam, the Center for Visual Art Rotterdam, and Rooftop Films.
Tess also directs and animates for commercial projects, runs and moderates the monthly Manifest Animation Show & Tell events in Rotterdam, where she is based, and lectures occasionally at universities in the Unites States and the Netherlands. Between 2007 and 2016 Tess regularly programmed experimental and animation films for self-organized screenings and film festivals.
Tess holds a Master of Animation from AKV St Joost (NL), a BA Fine Art from the University of Brighton (UK), and participated in the European Animation Sans Frontières professional training program 2015-2016.
