Sundance 2024: Jury Members Announced for 40th Festival Edition

The Sundance Institute has announced the 16-member jury for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, all of whom are festival alumni. The jury will award artistic and cinematic excellence across five competition sections. Notable members include Debra Granik, Adrian Tomine, Lena Waithe, and Zal Batmanglij. The festival, celebrating its 40th edition, will take place both in-person and online, featuring a diverse range of films and events.

As the Sundance Film Festival enters its 40th year, the Sundance Institute proudly announces a 16-member jury composed entirely of festival alumni. This diverse group will be responsible for awarding films in various competition categories at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, scheduled for January 18–28.

The jury includes acclaimed figures from various realms of the film industry. For the U.S. Dramatic Competition, the jury comprises Debra Granik, known for her Oscar-nominated "Winter’s Bone," Adrian Tomine, a celebrated graphic novelist, and Emmy-winning Lena Waithe. The U.S. Documentary Competition will be judged by Shane Boris, an Oscar-winning producer, Nicole Newnham, an Oscar-nominated documentary director, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Rudy Valdez.

World Cinema’s Dramatic and Documentary Competitions will be evaluated by Jennifer Kent, Mira Nair, Rui Poças, Mandy Chang, Monica Hellström, and Shaunak Sen, all of whom have made significant contributions to international cinema. The Short Film Program Competition will see Christina Oh, Danny Pudi, and Charlotte Regan at the helm. Zal Batmanglij, known for his work in both film and television, will judge the NEXT competition section.

The prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize has already been awarded to "Love Me," directed by Sam and Andy Zuchero. This prize, focusing on science and technology in film, was decided by a jury including Dr. Mandë Holford, Dr. Nia Imara, Matt Johnson, Theresa Park, and Courtney Stephens.

This year's festival, marking a significant milestone, will not only showcase a wide range of films but also include special events and programming to celebrate its rich history. The jury, all alumni, brings a unique perspective, having previously introduced their work at Sundance. This adds a layer of depth and understanding to their role in judging the new wave of independent films.

As part of the festival's tradition, the audience will also have a chance to vote for the Audience Awards in various categories, including U.S. Competition, World Competition, and NEXT. The Festival Favorite will be chosen from all feature films screened in person.
