Animac 2024 Announces Official Selections Across Four Categories

The International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia (Animac) has announced its official film selections for its 28th edition, taking place in Lleida from February 15-18, 2024, and online from February 22 to March 3. Among the highlights are "A Kind of Testament" by Stephen Vuillemin, an Oscar-shortlisted film, and "To Bird or Not to Bird" by Martín Romero, nominated for this year's Goya awards.

The festival's commitment to showcasing a broad spectrum of animated storytelling is evident in its diverse selection. The Official Shorts Section presents 38 films from 20 different countries, featuring notable works like "D'une peinture… à l’autre" by Georges Schwizgebel, "Drijf" by Levi Stoops, and "Electra" by Daria Kashcheeva. This section emphasizes personal vision, experimentation, and the exploration of new languages and techniques in animation.

Future Talent, dedicated to films from animation schools worldwide, includes 30 shorts from 12 nationalities. Highlights include "La gran cita de Conej" by Pablo Río, "Stabat Mater" by a French team, "It’s Just a Whole" by Bianca Scali, and "The Tornado Outside" by Maria Tomazou. This section serves as a platform for new creators to showcase their work.

Little Animac targets younger audiences with 25 films from 15 countries. Noteworthy are "Tabby McTat" by Jac Hamman and Sarah Scrimgeour, "Pig" by Jorn Leeuwerink, and "Prinzessin Aubergine" by Dina Velikovskaya. The section aims to introduce children to the world of animation and foster a love for cinema.

The Animac Talent.cat section highlights student films from the Catalan Countries, with 13 films presented by 9 centers. A jury of animation professionals will select the best short from this category.

ANIMAC 2024's theme is "Diversity," reflecting the animation industry's efforts towards inclusivity and representation of various cultures, identities, and experiences. The festival will feature monographic sessions, retrospectives, and workshops, including collaborations with Down Lleida and sessions focused on LGTBIQ+ identities.

This year's edition of ANIMAC not only celebrates the artistic achievements within the animated film industry but also emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusion in storytelling.
