Annecy 2024: Insight into Animation’s Creative Process at WIP Sessions

Annecy 2024's Work in Progress (WIP) sessions offer a unique look into the creative stages of animation films, series, and XR projects currently in production. Held in France, the event features 14 feature films, 2 series, and 5 XR projects. The WIP films and series are showcased at Salle Pierre Lamy, while the XR projects are presented at the Chambre de Métiers et de l'Artisanat.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024 is set to captivate audiences with its Work in Progress (WIP) sessions, providing a rare opportunity to delve into the intricate creative processes behind some of the most anticipated animation projects. Located in France, these sessions showcase 14 feature films, 2 series, and 5 XR projects that are currently in production.

This year’s WIP feature films and series will be hosted at the Salle Pierre Lamy. Attendees can explore a variety of storytelling techniques and artistic styles, gaining insights directly from the creative teams. Notable highlights include:

  • "A Story about Fire" directed by Wenyu Li from China, produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio.
  • "Allah Is Not Obliged" directed by Zaven Najjar, a collaboration between France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
  • "Another World" directed by Kai Chung NG from Hong Kong, produced by Point Five Creations.
  • "That Christmas" directed by Simon Otto from the United Kingdom, produced by Locksmith Animation and featuring the presence of Richard Curtis, known for his romantic comedies.
  • "Housenka" and "Hyakuemu" from Japan, directed by Baku Kinoshita and Kenji Iwaisawa, respectively.

Other significant entries include "Kai" from Peru, "Death Does Not Exist" from Canada and France, and "The Songbirds’ Secret" from France and Belgium.

The WIP series sessions will highlight:

  • "The Upside Down River" directed by Paul Leluc, a co-production involving France, Belgium, and Portugal.
  • "The Doomies" directed by Andrès Fernandez, a collaboration between France and the USA.

Additionally, the festival features five immersive XR projects in the XR&Games Area at the Chambre de Métiers et de l'Artisanat. These projects push the boundaries of storytelling through immersive technology. Highlights include:

  • "Garden Alchemy" from Denmark, directed by Michelle Kranot and Uri Kranot.
  • "Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom" from Japan and France, directed by Kenichi Suzuki.

Annecy 2024’s WIP sessions not only allow attendees to witness the evolution of these creative works but also provide a platform for networking and discussion with the creators, fostering a deeper appreciation of the art of animation.
