Slovakia’s Fest Anča Brings Nightmares to Life with International Animation
The 17th edition of the Fest Anča International Animation Festival, Slovakia's sole Oscar®-qualifying animation festival, is set to captivate audiences from June 25-30, 2024. This year's theme, NIGHTMARE, promises to deliver a haunting experience through a variety of screenings, concerts, exhibitions, and lectures.
Opening the festival is the cult Japanese film Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon, known for his psychological thrillers. The festival will also feature a masterclass by Nikita Diakur, a prominent figure in contemporary animation renowned for his unique blend of randomness and computer simulation. Diakur’s work, including his series Embracing the Chaos, will offer attendees a glimpse into a world where chaos and spontaneity reign supreme.
The festival’s curated selections, such as Sweet Dreams Are Made of This and Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining, explore nightmares through various lenses—dreaming, power, social prejudices, and inner demons. These themes will be further examined through discussions featuring experts like Liberty Blake Simon from the Mental Health League and psychologist Michal Hrozáň.
Highlighting the feature film lineup is Blood Tea and Red String, a surreal stop-motion fairy tale by American director Christiane Cegavske, with a live soundtrack performance by Slovak sound artist Bolka. Additionally, the festival will screen Studio Ghibli's Oscar®-winning film The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki, and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
For the first time, Fest Anča will expand to the Ster Century Cinemas multiplex, where films like Cryptozoo and Unicorn Wars will be shown. The festival's commitment to showcasing diverse animations is evident in its selection of both competitive and non-competitive films for children, including Bobo and What’s in the Box?
The Anča Awards, presented at the festival, hold significant prestige, as winners in categories like Best Animated Short Film can qualify for the Academy Awards®. This year’s jury includes notable figures such as Gabriel Gabriel Garble, Sébastien Sperer, and Waltraud Grausgruber.
Beyond films, Fest Anča will host concerts, DJ sets, and masterclasses. Highlights include performances by DJ Lycox and Alina Astrova (Lolina), and a masterclass by cinematographer Denisa Buranová. The festival also offers a robust program for professionals, including the Industry Day conference and the Student Forum.
Children are not left out, with a dedicated program featuring films, book readings, theatre performances, and creative workshops. The international competition for short animated films for children will be judged by a special children's jury.
The Fest Anča International Animation Festival aims to promote animation as a significant art form and educate audiences about its various styles.
