Berlinale World Cinema Fund Announces €260,000 in Grants for Global Film Projects
The Berlinale World Cinema Fund (WCF) has revealed its latest round of funding recommendations, allocating €260,000 to support ten film projects from nine countries. The decision, made during the fund's 40th jury session, underscores the WCF's commitment to fostering diverse storytelling and supporting filmmakers from regions with limited cinematic infrastructure.
The funding pot encompasses eight production grants and two distribution grants, benefiting projects from Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Egypt, Iran, Lesotho, Nepal, and Sudan. This selection was made from a pool of 195 submitted projects representing 55 countries, highlighting the global reach and competitive nature of the fund.
Vincenzo Bugno, head of the WCF, emphasized the importance of these funding decisions in the current global context. "At a time when the complexity of the world is often suppressed, the WCF jury meetings provide a space for reflection where we can engage with the worlds around us in all their marvellous and intricate diversity," Bugno stated. He noted that many of the selected projects originate from the African continent and feature unique characters facing challenging circumstances.
The jury, comprising documentary film producer Marta Andreu, director Ayşe Polat, film scholar Viola Shafik, and Bugno himself, recommended production funding for eight diverse projects. These include "I'm Coming for You" by Cyrielle Raingou (Cameroon), "Red Mist Descending" by Rakhsan Banietemad (Iran), and "La libertad doble" by Lisandro Alonso (Argentina), each receiving substantial grants to support their production.
The WCF Europe program specifically supported "Ancestral Visions of the Future" by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese (Lesotho) and "The Sky is Mine" by Deepak Rauniyar (Nepal). Both directors have previously participated in Berlinale Talents, showcasing the festival's commitment to nurturing emerging filmmakers.
In addition to production support, the WCF allocated funds for the distribution of two films in Germany. "Goodbye Julia" by Mohamed Kordofani (Sudan) and "Critical Zone" by Ali Ahmadzadeh (Iran) received grants to facilitate their theatrical releases in August and November 2024, respectively.
The Berlinale World Cinema Fund, established in 2004, has played a crucial role in supporting film production in regions with limited film infrastructure. It promotes cultural diversity in German cinemas and fosters cooperation between production companies from various regions and German/European producers.
The initiative is a collaborative effort of the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Berlin International Film Festival, with support from the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut. The WCF Europe program receives additional backing from the European Union's Creative Europe MEDIA program, while the WCF Africa program benefits from extra funding from the German Federal Foreign Office.
