Paul Schrader, Christof Papousek, and Philippe Bober Honored with Hearts of Sarajevo at 30th Sarajevo Film Festival
The 30th Sarajevo Film Festival paid tribute to three distinguished figures in the film industry—Paul Schrader, Christof Papousek, and Philippe Bober—by awarding them the prestigious Honorary Heart of Sarajevo. This award, established in 2005, recognizes individuals for their exceptional contributions to the film industry and their support for the development of the Sarajevo Film Festival.
Paul Schrader, the legendary American director and screenwriter, was honored for his remarkable contribution to the art of cinema. Schrader’s influential career includes writing iconic films like "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull," both directed by Martin Scorsese. Schrader received his award during a special ceremony at the Sarajevo National Theater, where he also served as the president of the jury for the Competition Programme - Feature Film at this year’s festival.
Reflecting on his career and the significance of the award, Schrader humorously remarked on his frequent travels and recalled a saying by John Huston: "Prostitutes and politicians become respectable over time, only if they manage to live to old age." He noted that perhaps his longevity in the industry was why he was receiving this honor. The award presentation was followed by a gala screening of Schrader’s latest film, "Oh, Canada." This recognition was especially meaningful for Schrader, as he had previously been awarded the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 28th festival but was unable to attend due to health issues.
Christof Papousek, co-owner of Constantin Film-Holding and CFO and managing partner of Cineplexx International, was also honored with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo. Papousek was recognized for his unwavering support of the Sarajevo Film Festival and his significant contributions to local film production. Under his leadership, Cineplexx has played a crucial role in the festival's success, providing advanced projection technology and serving as a key venue for festival screenings.
"Our deepest gratitude goes to Christof for his unwavering support and partnership over the years. His dedication to our shared vision has not only enriched our festival but has also fostered a true friendship that we deeply cherish," said Mirsad Purivatra, President of the Sarajevo Film Festival. Papousek expressed his appreciation for the award, saying, "It is an honor to be part of the family with the Heart of Sarajevo – because I, too, have a Heart for Sarajevo."
The partnership between Cineplexx and the Sarajevo Film Festival has been instrumental in bringing high-quality cinematic experiences to audiences in the region. The Cineplexx Sarajevo multiplex, a centerpiece of the festival, is equipped with the latest Barco Series 4 projectors, ensuring top-tier screenings.
Philippe Bober, the visionary founder of Coproduction Office and a producer of some of the most groundbreaking films in contemporary cinema, was the third recipient of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo. Bober was celebrated for his exceptional contribution to the film industry and his role in shaping modern cinema through collaborations with innovative filmmakers like Ruben Östlund, Roy Andersson, and Jessica Hausner.
Bober’s illustrious career spans over three decades and includes the production of 42 films, 13 of which have competed at the Cannes Film Festival. His work includes producing two Palme d'Or winners: "Triangle of Sadness" (2022) and "The Square" (2017), both directed by Ruben Östlund. Reflecting on his work, Bober said, "The auteurs I work with have the most personal, original ideas and working methods. As a producer, I support them in pushing the borders of cinematic language, while engaging audiences."
Bober has been a friend and supporter of the Sarajevo Film Festival for more than two decades, contributing as a programmer, jury member, and champion of CineLink, the festival’s co-production market. His dedication to nurturing unique talent has made him a pivotal figure in contemporary cinema.
"Philippe Bober’s work has had a profound impact on the film industry. His ability to recognize and nurture unique talent has given rise to some of the most influential films of our time. We are delighted to present him with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, recognizing not only his remarkable career but also his enduring contribution to the art of cinema and to the Sarajevo Film Festival," said Purivatra.
