Best 90-Second Reels Celebrated at Sarajevo’s “Films for Future” Competition in Bosnia
The 30th Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrated the winners of the "Films for Future" competition on August 22, awarding the creators of the best 90-second reels. The awards ceremony took place at Festival Square, highlighting the festival's ongoing commitment to environmental issues through cinematic expression.
The "Films for Future" competition, organized by the Sarajevo Film Festival in collaboration with Sarajevo, the UNESCO City of Film, and the Green Club, with support from the United Nations Development Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP BiH), aimed to engage young people in discussions about sustainable development and environmental protection.
The creative jury selected five standout entries, each of which responded to themes such as "What can young people do for a healthier and greener planet?" and "How can I help preserve the environment?" The winning filmmakers were: Elman Hasanspahić from Vogošća, Adina Mujkanović from Maglaj, Amelie Kreitz from Trnovo, Ailana Sofić from Živinice, and Muhamed Selimović from Zenica. Their awards, provided by the Green Club, included an electric scooter, a bicycle, a drone, wireless headphones, and a tablet.
During the ceremony, the director of the Sarajevo Film Festival, Jovan Marjanović, emphasized the importance of using the festival's platform to promote urgent environmental messages. "The great interest in the festival should be used to promote such urgent messages that we must send to as many people as possible. We show by our own example that these are not just words, but also actions," said Marjanović, acknowledging the role of the participating filmmakers in spreading these vital messages.
Želimir Nešković, representing the Green Club, praised the creativity and participation of the youth, noting, "It is a nice indicator of how much creativity was seen in these young people. This makes a contribution to the Sarajevo Film Festival and to us in the Green Club."
Victor Munteanu, the deputy resident representative of UNDP BiH, highlighted the importance of engaging young people through initiatives like "Films for Future." He stated, "Cinematography is, among other things, the way you see the world and the way you actually see the world. I want to thank you for the message you sent."
The "Films for Future" competition was inspired by the global youth movement "Fridays for Future" and sought to create awareness about the urgent need for sustainable practices. This initiative aligns with the Sarajevo Film Festival's commitment to the Net Zero mission—aiming for a zero rate of pollution—and its broader goal of embedding sustainable practices within its operations.
By incorporating these practices and encouraging audience participation, the Sarajevo Film Festival strives to leave a lasting positive impact on both the community and the environment. The "Films for Future" competition serves as a critical platform for youth to contribute their voices and creativity toward these global goals.
