21 Spanish Films Selected for Made in Spain at San Sebastian Festival 2024
The San Sebastian Festival, Spain, will once again host its 'Made in Spain' section, a prestigious non-competitive segment dedicated to highlighting the best of Spanish cinema from the past year. This year’s lineup includes 21 films, two of which will have their world premieres during the event.
Opening the section will be Joan López Lloret’s "Tiempo de silencio y destrucción," a documentary exploring the life and legacy of the Spanish writer and psychiatrist Luis Martín-Santos, marking 60 years since his untimely death and 100 years since his birth. The film takes viewers on a journey to rediscover Martín-Santos through the eyes of his children, providing a deep dive into his impact on post-war Spain and his unpublished works.
Closing the section is Alba Sotorra’s "Mucha mierda," a documentary that delves into the historic 1975 actors’ strike in Spain. Featuring first-hand accounts from notable actors like Marisa Paredes, Ana Belén, and José Sacristán, the film offers a unique perspective on this pivotal moment in Spanish theater history.
The 'Made in Spain' section will also showcase works by some of Spain’s most acclaimed directors. Antonio Chavarrías will present "La abadesa," a historical drama set in the 9th century, while Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez will bring "Segundo premio / Saturn Return," a film that explores the turbulent journey of a rock band from Granada during the late 1990s.
Notable titles include Andrea Jaurrieta’s "Nina," a revenge drama, and Jonás Trueba’s "Volveréis / The Other Way Around," which won the Europa Cinemas Label Award for Best European Film at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes at Cannes.
The selection is rounded out by a diverse array of genres and themes, from comedies like "Norberta" by Sonia Escolano and Belén López Albert, to thrillers such as "Justicia artificial" by Simón Casal, and even animated features like "Dragonkeeper" by Salvador Simó and Li Jianping.
This year’s 'Made in Spain' section exemplifies the rich variety and talent present in contemporary Spanish cinema, making it a must-see for festival attendees.
