2024 Student Academy Awards to Be Held in London on October 14
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the 2024 Student Academy Awards will be held in London for the first time, as part of its international expansion. Traditionally hosted at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the 51st annual awards ceremony will now take place at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square on October 14. The relocation is part of the Academy's broader push to increase its global reach and engagement within the international film community.
The ceremony will be hosted in partnership with the BFI London Film Festival, offering student award winners the opportunity to participate in panels and networking sessions aimed at career development. Winners will also have exclusive access to Academy members, providing further professional support. "As a leader in our international film community, and as our organization becomes more global in focus, the Academy is thrilled to bring the Student Academy Awards to London this year,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer.
This year’s winners, set to be announced in September, will be eligible to compete in the 97th Academy Awards in the categories of Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, and Documentary Short Film. The Student Academy Awards have a storied history, with past winners receiving 67 Oscar nominations and sharing 12 Academy Awards.
The event is sponsored by Rolex, a long-term partner of the Academy, as part of the recently launched Academy100 initiative. The campaign, which aims to raise $500 million, seeks to diversify the Academy's global outreach and revenue streams, fostering a new generation of filmmakers. Funds from the campaign will support numerous initiatives, including the Student Academy Awards, preservation of film history, and the creation of educational programs worldwide.
The Academy100 initiative marks a significant milestone in the Academy’s efforts to expand its influence beyond Hollywood and into the international film community. As part of this campaign, the Academy will organize special events, exhibitions, and gatherings to connect filmmakers, students, and Academy members globally. To date, over $160 million has been pledged towards the initiative, with Rolex playing a pivotal role in its success.
Rolex has a longstanding relationship with the Academy, sharing a commitment to cinematic excellence and fostering connections between generations of filmmakers and students. Their sponsorship of the Student Academy Awards underscores this dedication, ensuring that emerging filmmakers continue to receive recognition and support as they navigate the industry.
By relocating the awards to London, the Academy aims to strengthen its ties with the international film industry and support emerging talent from around the world.
