European Film Awards 2024: 12 Documentary Films Selected for Competition in Lucerne
The European Film Academy has unveiled the 12 documentaries selected for consideration at the 37th European Film Awards, scheduled for 7 December 2024 in Lucerne, Switzerland. This prestigious event honors outstanding achievements in European cinema, with a specific category dedicated to documentary filmmaking. The selected films represent a diverse range of perspectives and storytelling approaches, hailing from nine different European countries, both from within and outside the European Union.
Chosen by a committee of invited European experts, the 12 selected documentaries will be reviewed by the 5,000 members of the European Film Academy in the coming weeks. The films span a variety of themes and styles, reflecting the breadth of talent and creativity in contemporary European cinema. After the viewing process, the Academy members will cast their votes, and the final nominations for the ‘European Documentary’ category will be announced on 5 November 2024.
The 12 selected documentaries are eligible for nomination based on the European Film Academy's regulations, which stipulate that films must have had their first official screening between 1 June 2023 and 31 May 2024, and be directed by a European filmmaker. Exceptions are considered for directors who may not be European but have refugee status or have worked in Europe for an extended period.
The selection process aligns with the European Film Academy’s Diversity & Inclusion Standards, ensuring that the films not only represent the highest quality of European documentary filmmaking but also reflect a commitment to diverse and inclusive storytelling.
The European Film Awards ceremony, a major event on the European cinema calendar, will be organized by the European Film Academy and its production company, European Film Academy Production gGmbH. The awards are widely regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades in the European film industry.
Members of the Academy will continue to vote on the nominated films, and the winner of the ‘European Documentary’ category will be revealed during the ceremony on 7 December 2024 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
