Berlinale 2025 selects Todd Haynes as international jury president
US director Todd Haynes has been announced as the president of the international jury for the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), which will take place from February 13 to 23, 2025. This marks a significant milestone for the festival, as Tricia Tuttle steps into her inaugural year as the Berlinale’s director.
Tuttle described Haynes as “a dazzlingly gifted writer and director with an impressive range; his body of work is at once stylistically versatile but also unmistakably his.” She highlighted Haynes’ long-standing connection with the Berlinale, beginning with his debut feature Poison, which won the Teddy Award at the festival in 1991.
Haynes is celebrated for his contributions to cinema, with 10 feature films to his credit. Notable works include Far From Heaven (2002), which garnered four Oscar nominations, including best original screenplay for Haynes, and Carol (2015), a critically acclaimed romantic drama. His other recent projects include The Velvet Underground (2021), a music documentary, and the Netflix drama May December (2023).
Despite his successes, Haynes experienced a setback last summer when an untitled 1930s love story starring Joaquin Phoenix was canceled just before production, following Phoenix’s abrupt departure from the project.
As president of the Berlinale’s international jury, Haynes will oversee the selection of winners across key categories, including the coveted Golden and Silver Bears. The Berlinale, one of Europe’s leading film festivals, continues to attract global attention for its focus on bold and diverse storytelling.
