Academy Announces Animated, Documentary, and International Feature Film Submissions for 97th Oscars
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has disclosed the list of eligible feature films for the 97th Academy Awards in three key categories: Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, and International Feature Film. These announcements come as the awards season intensifies, leading up to the 97th Oscars ceremony scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Animated Feature Film Category
Thirty-one films are eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category. While some titles still require qualifying releases, the voting process will engage members of the Academy’s Animation Branch and other Academy members who opt in and meet viewing requirements. Notably, films submitted in this category may also qualify for nominations in other categories, such as Best Picture, and can overlap with entries in the International Feature Film category.
Documentary Feature Film Category
A total of 169 documentary films are competing for a spot on the shortlist of 15, which will be revealed on December 17, 2024. Films in this category can also qualify for awards in other categories, provided they meet all rules. Members of the Documentary Branch will determine the nominees based on voting results.
International Feature Film Category
Eighty-five countries or regions have submitted entries for the International Feature Film category, which requires submissions to be predominantly in a non-English language. Preliminary voting for this category is open to all Academy members who opt in and meet the viewing criteria. The shortlist of 15 films will also be announced on December 17, 2024.
