Berlinale 2025 marks 75th anniversary with new screening venue and festival hub in Germany
The Berlinale, Germany’s iconic film festival, is preparing to mark its 75th anniversary in 2025 by revitalizing its home at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. This initiative includes the introduction of two new venues, aimed at enhancing both public engagement and industry networking during the festival.
The Stage Bluemax Theater at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz will serve as a new screening venue, offering approximately 500 seats. This space will host key premieres from various Berlinale sections and will be the new home for the recently created Perspectives first feature competition. Screenings will be held throughout the festival period, ensuring consistent activity in the central area.
Adding to the innovation, the Berlinale HUB75 will be constructed temporarily at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz. This hub will host a series of free morning talks and events open to the public while also functioning as a networking space for industry professionals and filmmakers. The HUB75 aims to create a more dynamic and accessible environment for audiences and guests alike, with detailed programming set to be announced in January.
Tricia Tuttle, Festival Director, highlighted the importance of these additions, stating, “Since the closure and redevelopment of key cinemas in 2022, Berlinale has missed some of its former presence and buzz around our center in Potsdamer Platz. These new venues are part of our longer-term plans to recreate a more readily walkable festival heart and inject additional energy and visibility back into this central hub.”
The festival has faced challenges in recent years, with the closure of several key cinemas reducing seating capacity around Potsdamer Platz by approximately 150,000. While other Berlinale venues have compensated for this loss, the new initiatives aim to bring more screenings and events back to the heart of the festival.
With construction work around the Berlinale Palast nearing completion, the redesign of Potsdamer Platz now offers new opportunities for encounters and engagement. The festival's venues for 2025 will be announced in December, with the revamped central hub expected to play a pivotal role in Berlinale's future.
