Conclave and Wicked Lead Film Nominations for the 30th Critics Choice Awards in the US
The Critics Choice Association (CCA) unveiled the film category nominees for the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards, which will take place on January 12, 2025, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler, the event will air live on E! and stream on Peacock the following day.
Topping the nominations list are Conclave and Wicked, each securing 11 nods. Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, earned recognition in categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Acting Ensemble. Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini received acting nods, while the film also garnered nominations for cinematography, costume design, and score.
Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, also received a nomination for Best Picture alongside its acting ensemble. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. The film's nominations extended to technical categories, including cinematography, production design, and visual effects.
Close behind are Dune: Part Two and Emilia Pérez, with 10 nominations each. Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two earned nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and several technical categories. Notably, Hans Zimmer received a nomination for Best Score. Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, was recognized in both film and foreign-language categories. Its cast, including Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, received acting nominations.
The competition for Best Picture includes a diverse lineup of films: A Complete Unknown, Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, The Substance, and Wicked.
In the acting categories, notable nominations include Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), and Demi Moore (The Substance). Emerging talents were also celebrated, with Alyla Browne (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) and Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) among those vying for Best Young Actor/Actress.
The Critics Choice Awards are known as a significant indicator for the Oscars, often aligning with Academy Award nominations. According to CCA CEO Joey Berlin, “This year brought us an incredible wealth of storytelling and performances, leading to indescribably close races for nominations.”
