The Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland, has announced plans to evaluate moving its 80th edition in 2027 to the second half of July. The decision aims to address industry challenges and maintain its global reputation. Consultations with local and international stakeholders, including FIAPF, will guide the decision, with final outcomes aligning with public and industry needs.

The Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland is considering a significant change to its schedule for the event’s landmark 80th edition in 2027. The proposal, discussed during the Board of Directors' meeting on December 2, 2024, involves moving the festival dates to the second half of July. The intention was formally communicated to the City of Locarno, marking the start of a consultation process involving public bodies, industry stakeholders, and cultural organizations.

Against the backdrop of rapid changes within the global film industry, the Locarno Film Festival aims to adapt to evolving challenges. Shifting the festival to July could better align it with the international calendar and ensure it continues to attract global audiences, renowned filmmakers, and significant productions.

The festival’s leadership stressed the importance of maintaining Locarno’s position as a pivotal platform for the launch of international films. Established in 1946, the festival has consistently supported the growth and visibility of cinema on a global scale.

The decision to explore this potential date change reflects a commitment to dialogue with various stakeholders. Public authorities at federal, cantonal, and regional levels, along with private partners, cultural entities, and local businesses, will be included in discussions. Additionally, the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations (FIAPF), which regulates the scheduling of major global film events, will play a crucial advisory role.

“The ongoing transformations in the film sector demand proactive steps to ensure Locarno remains relevant and impactful,” stated a festival representative. This collaborative approach aims to achieve the best possible conditions for the festival’s future while balancing local and international interests.

While the next editions of the Locarno Film Festival will proceed on their established August schedules—from August 6 to 16 in 2025 and August 5 to 15 in 2026—the discussions initiated now will shape its trajectory for the years ahead.
