97th Oscars shortlists unveiled for 10 categories in Los Angeles

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the shortlists for the 97th Academy Awards®, covering ten key categories: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

The announcement, made in Los Angeles, USA, highlights a blend of established filmmakers and emerging voices across genres and regions.

Documentary Feature and Short Film

In the Documentary Feature Film category, 15 films, including “The Bibi Files” and “Daughters,” advanced from 169 eligible submissions. Similarly, 15 entries, such as “Death by Numbers” and “Once Upon a Time in Ukraine,” were shortlisted for Documentary Short Film from 104 qualified films.

International Feature Film

The International Feature Film category features 15 selections from 85 eligible countries, including Brazil’s “I’m Still Here,” France’s “Emilia Pérez,” and Senegal’s “Dahomey.”

Technical Categories

Notable entries in technical categories include “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked” in Makeup and Hairstyling, “Alien: Romulus” and “Gladiator II” in Sound, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” in Visual Effects.

Music Categories

Original Score nominees include works from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Brutalist,” while Original Song contenders feature tracks like “Forbidden Road” from Better Man and “Winter Coat” from Blitz.

Shorts and Animation

Animated Short Film nominees include “Au Revoir Mon Monde” and “Magic Candies,” while Live Action Short Film features entries such as “The Ice Cream Man” and “Room Taken.”

Nominations voting begins January 8 and concludes January 12, 2025. The final nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. The 97th Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast live in over 200 territories worldwide.
