2025 BAFTA Rising Star nominees unveiled in London
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the five actors nominated for the 2025 EE Rising Star Award, recognizing outstanding emerging talent in the global film industry.
The nominees are Marisa Abela, Jharrel Jerome, David Jonsson, Mikey Madison, and Nabhaan Rizwan. The announcement took place at London’s Savoy Hotel and was presented by actor Jack O’Connell, himself a previous recipient of the prestigious award.
Three of the nominees—Abela, Jonsson, and Rizwan—are British actors who have previously been featured as Screen UK-Ireland Stars of Tomorrow. Abela has garnered attention for her portrayal in “Back to Black,” a biopic about Amy Winehouse. Jonsson has been recognized for his role in the sci-fi film “Alien: Romulus,” while Rizwan’s performance in the experimental film “In Camera” has solidified his place among the industry’s rising stars.
The other two nominees hail from the United States. Jharrel Jerome, already an Emmy winner for “When They See Us,” is nominated for his lead role in “Unstoppable,” and Mikey Madison, best known for her work in “Anora,” completes the lineup. Both actors sent video messages as they were unable to attend the event in person.
The Rising Star Award, introduced in 2006, is unique in that it is the only BAFTA category voted for by the public. Nominees are selected based on their body of work and potential, rather than a single performance.
Last year’s award went to Mia McKenna-Bruce for her role in “How to Have Sex,” a film that also earned her recognition as a Screen Star of Tomorrow.
The full list of BAFTA nominations for 2025 will be unveiled on January 15, with the awards ceremony scheduled to take place on February 16 at the Royal Festival Hall in central London.
