The Karelian alphabet
Карельский алфавит

My current project engages with the mythology of my Karelian roots. Karelians are a Finnic ethnic group, which is today split between Finland and The Republic of Karelia in Russia. Karelian identity was tabooed in the USSR after the Soviet-Finnish war (1939-1940). My work addresses the experience of the people who suffered greatly from colonial wars. I have already made a short animated documentary “The Karelian alphabet”. It is an experimental video based on the traditional Karelian embroidery patterns. I also use Karelian language in my film in order to support and promote it. I intend to keep working with decolonization themes.
