Mute Scottish pianist Ada is sold into marriage in the wilds of New Zealand. Arriving with her young daughter, she discovers that her husband intends to leave her piano on the beach – a symbol of the intractable relations to come. Ada is soon drawn to an alluring neighbor, who promises to help her. Jane Campion’s classic film was the recipient of the Palme d’Or and three Oscars.
