The Future is Virtual is an animated short film that expresses the main characters worldview through the aethetic of the animation. The film intentionally embraces 'Internet Ugly', an amateur and imperfect style that is common in online meme creation and this formalistic choice conceptually serves the content of the film. The film intentionally is experimental in its use of AI tools, pushing back on corporate aesthetics in order to explore how to use AI tools while retaining creative agency. As we are pushed into a new era of AI technology, filmmakers must find ways to use technology to speak back to it. The Future is Virtual uses AI filmmaking tools to critique them, and is a social commentary on not simply technology itself, but also those that create it who seek power.
