Six years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, an impoverished family of artists struggles to survive in crisis-stricken Moldova. Friends and neighbors have quietly abandoned the sinking ship in order to seek a better life abroad, but Zina is driven by desperation to rent out their house — with dire consequences.
