Humanity has been utterly annihilated by a global nuclear war. Here live the 'Woman' (late 30s), dressed in a tacky floral dress, and 'Da-on' (early 20s), an innocent young man born without a navel. The Woman constantly warns him that "outside is hell." She tames Da-on by feeding him exclusively what she cultivates within the house and teaching him to dance, to the cheap, upbeat rhythms of Ppongjjak(Korean trot). One night, driven by hunger, Da-on discovers a crimson mushroom blooming from a gap in the wall.
