Twelve-year-old Lingling has grown up with her undocumented single mother. One summer night, she discovers that her mother is preparing for voluntary departure, leaving the country alone. The next morning, as harsh sunlight pours through a narrow window, Lingling begins to wonder if she should search for the father who disappeared long ago in order to survive. She arrives in “Shindo,” her father’s hometown — an isolated island village surrounded by water on all sides. Drifting there without direction, Lingling finds herself at the home of “Grandma Ottangkko,” rumored to eat people.
