Company Sports Day

This is the second animated feature by Lee Yong-sun, who previously met BIFAN audiences with the short Trying to Remember (2011) and his first feature I’ll Just Live in Bando (2017). In its tragicomic portrait of ordinary people struggling through an absurd world, The Company Sports Day continues the thematic concerns of I’ll Just Live in Bando. Sales Team 3 has been made the scapegoat, and its manager, Kwon Joo-hyun, is a middle-aged man facing his own crisis. To protect themselves, they must organize a company sports day and fight tooth and nail to secure the crucial evidence they need. Combining the director’s soft, rounded drawing style with vividly individual characters, The Company Sports Day grounds itself firmly in workplace reality. The film looks at office workers who must endure the pressures of corporate life. Here, the team tries to break free from oppression through solidarity, while Manager Kwon struggles to restore his broken family. It is an animation that looks at the joys and sorrows of ordinary office workers with compassion. The film was selected for the Midnight Special section of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.(KIM Hyung-seok)
