The Only Child in the Butchery

Yoo Hyung-jun’s The Only Child in the Butchery brings together the elements of an accidental crime, the offbeat tone of black comedy, and the framework of a family drama. The film proceeds by way of indirection: it is sustained less by what is openly revealed than by the tension generated by what remains precariously hidden beneath the surface. At the center of the narrative is revenge. Tae-seop has lived as a worker at a butcher shop, regarding his aunt’s husband as a father figure, only to realize as an adult that he has been treated as little more than a slave. Wanting to build a home with the person he loves, he begins plotting to extort money from him. As elements of crime cinema—private investigation, adultery, paranoid jealousy, blackmail, and disappearance—enter the story, the plot begins to twist and turn, unfolding like a guessing game for the audience. What is especially intriguing is that the film also carries the traits of a coming-of-age story.
