The Girl

The feature debut of Mészáros (one of the first films in the history of Hungarian cinema directed by a woman) is ostentatiously cool from the first minute. The already memorable foreground, glued together from photos with the singer Kati Kovávs playing the main role, suggests that we will be dealing with a modern film about a modern and infernally fashionable (short hairstyle, dark glasses) heroine. Everything in you says that you are from pest-will hear at some point the title Girl. Erzsi actually works in a textile factory near Budapest. She grew up in a children's home, and her announcement in the newspaper that she was looking for her parents was just answered by an elderly woman from the village. It will not be a social film. Mészáros makes his new-wave debut, having for nothing the dramaturgical rules of this type of story. Her first film has a broken, unbalanced structure, it seems as if from unwillingness to open formally, she is not looking for a punch line, she is more interested in interpersonal relations in space than in dialogue. It is above all a portrait of a woman: a girl without roots, thinking, observing her surroundings, trying to rebuild her identity beyond traditional roles.
