Park Heon-su’s The Real Man belongs in that lineage. The director clearly aims for exuberant genre action. The technical difficulty of its car stunts and the sheer scale of its gunfights are remarkable, while its motifs of escape and pursuit are core elements of genre cinema. Yet a character inspired by an opera diva, a trio in red, yellow, and blue, a villain’s lair resembling a medieval fortress, and a torrent of theatrical dialogue pull the film far beyond the bounds of conventional genre cinema. A would-be “the real man” cornered by poor sales, Sa-nai sets the story in motion on a sudden impulse. After giving a “beautiful woman” a ride, he is swept into a series of comic-book-like adventures. Even as he is bloodied and battered almost beyond recognition, he never loses the bearing of a real man.
