Uppsala Short Film Festival combines international and Swedish short-film competitions with retrospectives, filmmaker focuses and a dedicated programme for children and young audiences. Fiction, documentary, animation and experimental work share its screens in Uppsala’s historic cinema district, including Slottsbiografen. The festival dates back to 1982 and is run by the non-profit Kulturföreningen för Filmfestival i Uppsala.

The 45th edition runs from 19–25 October 2026, with more than 300 films across Slottsbiografen, Fyrisbiografen and Uppsala Konsert & Kongress. Filmmaker discussions accompany screenings, while the industry programme includes Uppsala Talent Days, the Uppsala Short Film Pitch, work-in-progress showcases and talks on filmmaking. Recurring special programmes explore fantastic cinema, queer perspectives, comedy and very short films.

Awards and prizes

The 2026 International Competition awards include the Uppsala Grand Prix, comprising the Uppsala Film Statuette and SEK 50,000; the Uppsala Award in Memory of Ingmar Bergman, worth SEK 50,000 from Uppsala’s Cultural Affairs Board; an audience award; and selection of the Uppsala Short Film Candidate for the European Film Awards. The National Competition awards Best Swedish Short Film, with an Uppsala Film Jackdaw and SEK 50,000 from the Swedish Film Institute; Uppsala Early Bird, with SEK 10,000 and a distribution offer from Draken Film; and an audience award. The published 2026 submission regulations also list Best Children’s Film, comprising an Uppsala Film Jackdaw and SEK 15,000, chosen by a jury of schoolchildren. Award amounts and conditions are subject to change.

Festival rules

For the 2026 edition, films of all genres are eligible if their running time does not exceed 40 minutes and their production year is 2025 or 2026. Entries are submitted through Shortfilmdepot or FilmFreeway. Swedish productions enter the National Competition and/or the Children’s Film Competition; films for children enter the latter. A film may be submitted once per competition, including works in progress, which must identify unfinished work. Preview copies with dialogue other than English or Swedish require English subtitles. Selected international and national competition films screen on DCP, 16 mm or 35 mm, with an MP4 backup; children’s films require an H.264 or H.265 MP4. Additional subtitling and translation requirements apply. Competition screenings carry no screening fee. Preview copies may be available to accredited industry guests during the festival and for 30 days afterwards, and copies may be retained for research in the festival archive. Entries for 2026 close on 31 May 2026. International Competition fees are EUR 12 in January, EUR 17 in February–April and EUR 25 in May; the National Competition has no entry fee and the Children’s Film Competition costs EUR 5, excluding platform charges. The organizer announces the next submission window as 1 January–31 May 2027.
