The Alexandre Trauner ART/Film Festival (ATAFF) in Szolnok, Hungary, centres on production design. It bears the name of Sándor (Alexandre) Trauner, the Budapest-born, Oscar-winning production designer, and its feature competition of invited films honours the production designers of the winning film. Further competitions cover documentaries on science and the fine arts, live-action and animated shorts, and media-literacy films by Hungarian and diaspora creators. Besides a production designer, the main jury includes a director and a cinematographer, each of whom gives a masterclass; much of the audience consists of students from Hungarian and international film and art schools.
Film festivals in Szolnok date back to 1969. Tisza Mozi Ltd has organised them since 1998, and the festival has carried Trauner's name since 2018. The 2026 edition runs 13–18 October 2026 at the TISZApART Cinema in Szolnok.
Awards and prizes
Feature Films Competition: Trauner bronze statue, certificate of merit and cash award, presented to the production designer(s) of the winning film.
Documentary Film Competition: bronze plaquette, certificate of merit and cash award, presented to the director(s).
Short Film Competition: certificate of merit and cash award, presented to the director(s). A special prize goes to the most visually impressive short film (to its production designers).
Media-Conscious Films (Hungarian and diaspora creators): certificate of merit and cash award, presented to the director(s).
Signal Film Competition: awards for the top three submissions.
Life Achievement Award: Trauner bronze statue and certificate of merit.
The bronze statues and plaquettes are works by the sculptor Benő Gábor Pogány.
Festival rules
Entry rules of the 2026 edition:
- Films must have been completed after 1 January 2024. Each creator may submit up to two films.
- Entries are accepted only via FilmFreeway. Entry fee: 5 USD.
- Feature Films Competition: by invitation only; 10 films with a strong emphasis on visual storytelling.
- Documentary Films Competition: films on scientific topics and on the fine arts, up to 90 minutes; documentaries, mockumentaries, portrait films and other forms are eligible. Science and fine-arts films are judged separately.
- Short Films Competition: live-action and animated short films under 30 minutes, judged separately; no restrictions on genre or age group.
- Digital Realities: films on media literacy and digital culture by Hungarian and cross-border Hungarian creators under 18.
- Signal Film Competition: for students enrolled in film-related higher education in Hungary or in Hungarian-language institutions abroad.
- Non-English films must have burnt-in English subtitles. Competition films are screened from DCP.
- For films selected for competition, the festival provides accommodation and one meal per day for one creator.
- The festival does not pay rental or screening fees for short films and documentaries.
- Competition films may be screened in the "ATAFF Best of" programme until 31 December 2026.
