Almaty Indie Film Festival presents independent cinema from Kazakhstan and around the world, welcoming filmmakers at different stages of their careers and working across budgets. Its programmes encompass fiction and documentary features and shorts, animation and music videos. Screenings are accompanied by filmmaker meetings and educational events.
Founded in 2017, the nonprofit festival began online and has also held in-person events in Almaty. The 2026 edition takes place on 15–17 January 2027 in a hybrid format, combining an online programme with selected screenings and events in Almaty.

Awards and prizes
Competitions include Kazakhstani and international fiction, documentary and short films, as well as animation, music videos and other categories. Special awards include the Audience Choice Award and the festival Grand Prix.
Festival rules
Films are submitted through FilmFreeway using an online screener. Films not in English require English subtitles. Separate submissions and fees apply to each work. Online public screenings require separate permission from the rights holder; declining does not affect Official Selection or eligibility for awards. Official Selection does not guarantee an in-person screening.
